Just taking a moment to pause and acknowledge the tragic event that took place earlier this year here in Kocani. I think this may be part of the reason why I’ve felt less motivated to write here over the summer. It’s impossible to ignore, and yet I don’t feel that I’m in a position—or even entitled—to say very much about it.
Although I feel at home here and connected to the community, moments like this remind me that I am a guest. My time here is through the lens of sunshine and relaxation, while daily life for those who live here is so much more layered.
I experienced the tragedy mostly through my husband and the first-hand stories he shared in the days and weeks after the fire. My heart and thoughts remain with everyone affected. My condolences, prayers, and hopes for healing on all levels may feel small, but they are deeply felt—and I am humbled simply to be here.
Holding this place in my heart. With love and respect.
