Skopje Fortress

When visiting Skopje its worth the walk up to the Fortress. As with most places in Macedonia including Matka Canyon and the Millennium Cross, you will not see many, if any, signs directing you to the Fortress so its best to come prepared.

The Fortress can be found at the top end of the Turkish Bazar, if you continue walking through the small lanes, past the shops and restaurants you will reach an area of market stalls, weave yourself through this market and with the aid of your trusty google maps you will see the Fortress rising up in front of you.

You can also get a taxi from the main square up to the Fortress, but not half so much fun. Its a pretty strenuous climb up, so keep that step-counter on, you will have earned that extra beer.

There is no admission fee to the Fortress. You can walk around the remains of the wall, be prepared once you have walked around you have to walk back as it is a dead end. Don’t let this put you off, as you walk round there are many look-out points and towers to climb. Health and Safety has not entered the Macedonian language as yet so please look after yourselves and your loved ones….

You get an amazing view over the city and if you’re lucky you get to witness a Macedonian wedding, as this seems to be a popular spot for photo’s!

The Fortress is seeped in history and the last time we visited there were guides offering a tour with explanation of the origins of the Fortress. We declined the offer so I cannot advise you on this. If anyone takes up the offer please let me know!
