Matka Canyon is an half hour drive out west of the city center of Skopje. Buses go regularly to this area and taxi’s take you for around 600MKD (10 euro).
Matka Canyon is a great getaway for the locals in the city. It can get very busy in the afternoon and best to avoid on a Sunday. During the week it is generally quiet.
We parked at the first car park and took the fairly steep incline up towards the entrance to the Canyon. As you round the corner you see the first sign for boat rides or hiring of Kayaks. If you want a trip along the river without visiting the cave then this is the one for you. If not keep walking another 200 meters and you will come to the next stop.
We had a pleasant and cooling trip down the river, the scenery was spectacular. On the way we picked up a couple of Kayakers who were struggling to make it to the caves. The kayak was clipped onto the back of the boat and off we went.
After about 20 minutes on the boat we pulled up to a landing deck where we were told we could climb up to the caves where we would meet our guide.

It was a pretty steep climb up which is why I saved my breath and took the photo’s going down!
It was worth the climb, the stalactites, stalagmites and dripstone were beautifully illuminated
It was also 15oC which was most welcome!
