Money

100 denar = 1 euro 60 cents

North Macedonia is still a nation of cash.

It is possible to pay with credit and debit cards but often the banks in Macedonia will charge you for the service.

When withdrawing money it is advisable to use an ATM which is attached to a bank otherwise you will be charged up to 5 euro for the withdrawal.

At the time of writing this withdrawing 50 euro will give you 3000 Macedonian Denar (MKD) so means you will have an enormous wad of notes in your hand. ATM’s do not always allow you to withdraw more, best to be aware if this especially if you bank only allows one withdrawal per day from an ATM.

Small change, such as 10 mkd is given in notes as well as coins. There is no smaller denomination than the Denar.
